Hello, Dr. Binder. I have just begun reading your internet articles on the
"Second Temple Synagogues". I am looking into further
research that would tell me more of their
culture, through the archaeological finds
in that early period of literature. I am
interested in the time period between the
time period of Genesis, and Psalms--and would appreciate any sites, or links to this type of information. Naturally, I have been pouring over the information from the two college library's at hand, and I am learning to navigate my way through the internet.
Sincerely,
J Lynne Granander
rarhythm@aol.com

Hi, I'm mike davis, M.Th. '69. Had the pleasure of studying with Drs. Harvey, Ogden, Deschner ( a true jewel of a man), and Farmer. I abandoned the ministry in '71; too much bull for my meagre political talents, But I have never forgotten my education at Perkins. Although a psychotherapist (narrative, post-modern, no less) and not much of a churchman, I continue to read and think about theology and biblical studies. I discovered this site as I was looking for material to assess the work of N. T. Wright-especially Jesus and the Victory of God. What a pleasure to find you. I have not examined your whole site--it is very large!--but I have definitely bookmarked it.
A comment and a question. I was deeply saddened to learn of the death of John Deschner in 2000. I only discovered this fact about 2 months ago. All of his learning at the feet of Barth was wasted on me, I'm afraid. But to this day, I remember him as the only teacher that I ever had who actually said aloud "I think that I am mistaken" (what he actually said was, in a seminar in anthropology, "Another fine theory shot down by the facts"). As a class, we walked out of the seminar disbelieving what we heard. Such a fine teacher.
The question. What do you make of Stanley Hauerwas? How can a bricklayer's son from Pleasant Grove rise up to give the Griffith Lectures? How did he do that? He and I are about the same age and both come from Dallas's working class and the, at best, middling education, offered by The Dallas ISD.
What do you make of his theology? I like that he can be vulgar when the occasion calls for it, but he often reads as a 21th cent. tribalist; his advocacy of no salvation outside the church (I do not believe he has clearly asserted that--but something close, I think). And what flesh and blood church is he talking about? Most of the ones that I have been exposed to are parochial and self serving if not self aggrandizing. And yet...his prose is so engaging and his arguments so fused totether by head and heart(I doubt if the man has ever written a trivial sentence) that I want his vision in this paragraph or that chapter to be so. I want his vision of a church as polis (even if a romanticed polis--the Greeks had a time sustaining civil culture) to be true. But, I have strong doubts; but I still read him, etc., etc.
I am sure that I have passed all reasonable expectations for a "comment" about your site. But it was such a pleasure to find your work and at my old alma mater!
With sincere good wishes

I thank you G-d for all efforts spent on the study about synagogue.
I have a question: Is the synagogue in Egypt the first one that ever built? If yes, was it built by the Israelites moved to Egypt after the murder of Gedaliah (2 Kings 25:26)?
Thank you and regards,

Do you know anything about sources for the end time vision of the Prophet Joel. While the vision of Isaiah I seems totally Jewish in character and Malachi seems Christian (zoroasterian), Joel seems unique. Although the idea that "anyone who invokes the name of the Lord shall be saved" may be a preview and a hint of Christianity, the idea of God pouring down his spirit on all people with dreams, prophicies, etc. --what is that? Could it be Gnostocism?

Your Web site is incredible; the Lord is blessing you. I will be using it in the Intro to the New
Testament course you are teaching at VTU. I could not find the notes from last night, which
was probably my oversight. I'll check with you in class next Thurs.
I also wanted to change from an audit to a graded category. I would like to do a paper on Luke and
Acts as it relates to pastoral counseling and healing. I am a member of the Order of
St. Lukes. Do you have a chapter in your church?
Will discuss with you next Thursday. Thanks for sharing your wonderful Bible knowledge.

Dear Dr. Binder,
I found your site about the The Bosporus Kingdom most interesting. I am at the moment working on a paper where I seek to trace Snorri Sturlusons travel description of the Asa people from Asgard to the Danish island of Funen (Odinsey). A great many sources place the Asa people around the Sea of Asov around year zero. A theory put forward by the Danish priest and historian Grundtvig was that the King of Asburg (10 AC) and Phanagoria, which in Danish would be "Asborg" (ie. the Castle of the Asa people) and "Vanagaard" (ie. the Home of the Vanir people), in fact is central to the understanding of how the Asa People travelled from the East and ended up in Denmark as the Danes.
Heimskringla which is the basis of my paper clearly states that Odin had great possessions in the area. We also know about the wars between the Asa and the Vanir. My own view at the moment is that the Asa people did arrive from Asgard to the area. My central theory is that they went to Gardarike (a kingdom comprising Kiev and Novgorod) and got divided when Odin and the Danes moved on. The Bosporus Kingdom could be where the part of the Asa people that moved south went to. But it could also be the case that in fact Snorri did not have a specific address of where they went and that The Bosporus Kingdom was the kingdom of the Asa people from where they went to Saxland and then Denmark. The origin of the runic futhark is also believed to be from the area. Would you perhaps have discovered anything in your studies that could assist me in my understanding of who the inhabitants of the The Bosporus Kingdom were? (I know that King Aspurg was Schytian)
Best regards

Rather than change what we, in the Christian west, call our dating system why not just give us the dates in the Jewish calendar, the Mayan calendar, or any other religion's calendar for that matter. It would be less intellectually dishonest than "un-Christianizing" the Christian calendar.
P.S. If you think this era is "common" you don't know very much history at all!

Very well done. Thank to your publisher for supporting this website. I am a student of the Essene
Doctrines...and of Ancient History. In a referenence found on www.nutraceutic.com, the description
of the Therapeutae, includes a lineage. It states "Mary was one of the seven sacred Almah (or Virgins)
of the Temple, practitioners and teachers of the purification traditions of women..."
Have you heard of te Almah? I know of the purification traditions, and am in a huge flow of
information from this time...including your fabulous site! Perhaps, if of interest to you, a link or posting
any notes found on the Almah...Most gratefully. Kelly O

Thank you for a very informative and well written site. This topic is very new to me. I am actually found your website while doing searches on the Essenes. My interest in this group was sparked by a tv Discovery channel presentation. Not much to go on, but I do hope to learn more about this intesting group. Through the years I do remember hearing that it is thought, at least by some scholars, that Jesus may have dwelt with this cult at some point prior to His three year ministry on earth.
Once more, thank you. I look forward to reading more of your work and hope to learn much by doing so.

read the historical material which you have painstakingly researched. My interest in
your web-site was peeked by my reading of Paul Johnson's book, A History of the Jews.
I wanted to do a little research of my own to have a better understanding of what
happened at the time of the destruction of the Second Temple in Jerusalem and also to
have a better understanding of what happened to the Diaspora. The information contained
in your web-site is very helpful. Thank you for your historical contribution to our

Interesting site, I have visited Masada two years ago and had a rest on the stairs of the synagoge. Can you tell me after the excavation are the remains a more or less rebuilt, and is there much changed to make a clear display of the plan of the synagoge. For the rests of the roman bathes were rebuilt and supplied by a roof. Also the palaces were grown much larger as they were found.

As my wife and I are the only Jews living in a town located in the wilds of North West England, some 12 miles SSE from Liverpool (The Home of the Beatles!), we try to sample all Web sites concerned with Jews, the Jewish people, and Judaism in general.
I found your Web site quite interesting, but I have several questions. Since you argue that the synagogue was in effect an extension of the Jerusalem Temple, where if anywhere do the Ebionites (the original Jewish Christians) fit into the picture, if anywhere? Did they continue to worship in existing or new synagogues common to all Jews, or were they eventually excluded from these synagogues, leading them to estabvlish their own places of worship? Also, if the Ebionites were forced to establish separate places of worship, did they refer to these facilities by the Hebrew/Aramaic name of Beit ha-Knesset, of which Synagogue is the literal Greek translation, or did they term their places of worship Ekklesiai, i e, churches?
Also, have you come across any First Century C E Christian literature, perhaps but not exclusively connected to the synagogues, which refers to Baraithot, i e, doctrinal statements attributed to leading Perushim, that is to say, Pharisees?

In our study for this week we are looking at influences on early Christian worship and synagogues were mentioned as early influences. Since I didn't know much about synagogues, I looked on the net and found your web site. IT HAS BEEN A TREMENDOUS HELP! Thanks for posting all of this very interesting information!

Thanks for the beautiful website. I think I got here through a "geomantic divination" search? I am participating in a local study of the Book of Genesis and was fascinated by the accretion and evolution of sacred sites. When I suggested that wells were sacred because they represented a meeting place for the underworld and the natural world, I got some startled looks. I expect that when I suggest that Daniel tended an oracular shrine, I'll get some more!
Keep up the good work. Again, thanks for a beautiful, complex, and informative website.

Thanks for your website. The classes looked interesting. I've been studying Revelation for about 12 years & have come to the conclusion that it is rooted in seven Visions of Christ. So it's structure is Prolog, Christ as: Priest/King...Lamb Almighty...Christ Angel...Christ Child...Lamb on Zion...Son of Man on Cloud,(reaper) and, last as King Priest. I've written a mss. on this and have some shorter papers outlining the seven visions and would be happy to send them to you.

Hello! I've been in your page only for som minutes, but I found it very interesting. I want to visit your page later. I search for literature on a subject I study and write about: "The Moses- and Elijah-tradiditions in the second temple period and Jesus from Nasareth". If you know about some literature on the subject, I would be thankful to hear from you.
I will read more from your study later on, because i travel in Israel once and twice each year with study groups or for own studies.
God bless you.

I am in the process of writing a paper on the understanding of "Elder" in the Jewish context. If you can offer any suggestions in this regard I would appreciate your input. Nevertheless, I want to thank you again for all of your work in putting together this invaluable site. The Lord's blessings be upon you.
Sincerely,

Hello,
Nice site, and I will have to read it somewhat more deeply. I find it tiring to read from the computer screen...
I'd like to ask you to remove Yoel Rappel's name from your reference to Gutmann's book. We had to put his name for legal reasons in the inside cover, but in fact he had very little to do with the production of the book, and much less (that's absolutely nothing) with its writing!
Thanks.

I,ve just found your site and have not had that much time to do a great deal of exploring, though what I have seen is very impressive and interesting. I would just like to make note of one thing. You collect all the ancient literary references to synagogues. I looked for instance at your section on Judea and Jerusalem. For synogogues in this are you might want to take note of the mention of the 480 synogogues mentioned in reference to Jerusalem in the Jerusalem Talmud, Tractate Megila, Chapter 1, Halachot 1 and 9, if I'm not mistaken (I'm giving u the source from memory). There are also other historical references in the talmudic and rabbinic literature. And wjile these references are in the later talmudic compilations, prominent scholars have shown the antiquity of the traditions they contain. Y.P.

I wanted to order your book about a year ago and I was told that it was not yet published. I forgot about it in the meantime and it was just brought to my attention. I read great portions of the books and I find your discussions precise and meticulous. I am sure that it will be a classic in its field. I have just published a bibliography of articles on synagogues throughout the ages and I would like to send you a copy if you will provide me with a snail mail address. I tried to order your book through amazon. com and i was now informed that it is out of print. Is it possible to get a copy? I could offer to review it either in Hebrew in an Israeli journal or perhaps in English for H-Judaic.

Very interesting site. I was interested in what prompted the formation of additional
synagogues? The size of the membership to constitute a synagogue? Guidelines for number
of Elders to form Council of Elders to pass judgments and order discipline in religious
matters? Many Christian assemblies based their practice of plurality of Eders on the form
of government in the AD 1-70 synagogues. I would appreciate any information you could
provide. Thanks

Great site. I'd suggest that Dr. Binder delve more deeply into the burgeoning field of Samaritan studies. Alan D. Crown and others have done revolutionary work to open up new vistas for understanding just how real and widespread was the "Samaritan Diaspora" throughout the Second Temple Period. Likewise, more study might reveal the presence in Galilee of MANY non-Judaean "Israelites" during this period.

Who do you think the mysterious widows of Acts 6 were, and what was their relationship to the synagogues? I am writing a doctoral dissertation on Greek synagogues in Jerusalem in the Late Seconf Temple Period, and would be interested in your opinion.
Yours sincerely,

Thank you for any help you can offer me on my research into the orgin of the symbol I decribed in the e-mail sent to your message board. Your web-site is very well designed and shows a lot of attention to detail. The photos of the uncovered temple ruins were a very nice touch. It would be great to see it in person and maybe even "The Temple" when it is finaly rebuilt, hopefully in our lifetime. Sincerely S.L. Morrison

It's a pleasure to read articles which simply give the facts and the author's point of view, even pointing out the areas of controversy !
That lets me trust your information and draw my own conclusions ! Too many sites on the web are designed to 'prove' a belief or point of view without the information needed for reaching that conclusion.
Thank you for your contribution of another piece of the puzzle.

Your site is very interesting, and I learned a great deal from this little-known part of
Jewish history. My brother-in-law, Rabbi Mendy Block, is a Chabad rabbi in Plano,
and I think it would be great if you could speak to his learning groups about the
Synagogues. I am sure Mendy would offer a more"traditional" view of how the
Jewish sources viewed the purpose and functions of the Temple.
His email is rabbiblock@yahoo. Drop him a line! I'll tell him about this site.

Dear Donald
Thank you for this excellent web site! I am a graduate in Classical Hebrew studies from the
School of Oriental and African Studies, London. Although I graduated three years ago, I still
maintain an interest in related fields, admittedly becoming steadily more weird in orientation.
(Most recently I've become interested in the modern mythology surrounding the lineage of
Jesus, so called, and the Holy Grail myths often cited in this connection. Often writers on this
subject are conspiracty theorists of 'psuedo-Arian' ("Jesus was a man who had children") or
Gnostic (I guess because it's the vogue!) inclination. Often somewhat spurious arguments
will cite the pseudepigraphae or Nag Hammadi texts for substantiation, so it's fantastic that
you have provided an academically dependable resource here accessible to everyone.
(However, in the spirit of open-mindedness I should add that the above mentioned theor-
ists have highlighted a good number of references to decscendants of Joseph of Arimathea in
the Medieval Grail sources which counterbalances my cynnicism). Anyway, as a person
neither Jew nor Christian nor Templar nor Rosicrucian... nor anything!, I'd like to thank you
again for your site, which is both informative and refreshingly open minded.
Best wishes,
Jonathan Quaife.

By far the most comprehensive site dedicated to the Second Commonwealth period that I have seen on the web. Your methodology, that is, confining sources to the period or shortly thereafter, is sorely needed. Your conclusions are most interesting, because I have long felt that the role of synagogue in Jewish life at that time has been sorely downplayed-- and even prejudiciously-- neglected. Looking forward to more additions, and would particularly like to find out more about worship cycles (Sabbath readings, etc) used during this time frame.

The Most important issue related to the Synagogue from Jericho is that is has a triclinium shaped addition to the main structure. If indeed it is a synagogue this is the only evidence known for the gathering for fiests tradition attested in Josepus' writings. Besides an even more ancient synagogue was found recently in Kiryat Sefer yet not yet published to my knowledge. Do you know anything about it?. D.

I am interested in your work. My 1993 Ph.D. diss. ("The Rich in Faith" and "The Poor in Spirit": The Socio-Rhetorical Function of a Saying of Jesus in the Epistle of James) will appear this year (1999) in the SNTSMS (as, The Voice of Jesus in the Social Rhetoric of James). I hold that the reference to "your synagogue" in Jas 2.2, reflects a judicial assembly or church court. Have you found anything that sheds light on court proceedings within "synagogues" that Christian "assemblies" would have drawn upon in dealing with legal grievances in their communities?

Dear Friend:
Excellent Web Site With Incredible Information!
We are a home education company that produces interactive DVD ROM documentaries on various historical locations throughout the world. Our most recent endeavor will be an in-depth interactive DVD on the history, culture, archaeology, etc. of Israel.
We are looking for an archive of fully produced documentary style video clips on many of the historical and archaeological sites in Israel that could be licensed to us and that we could use as an augmentation to our DVD subject. In addition to the video clips we are also looking for still photos of historic sites and archaeological finds in Israel to be licensed and used in our production.
If you have any of the above resources or know where we should go for further information or if you are able to license clips of video and photographic stills for use in our project we would greatly appreciate you contacting us. We would also like to know what costs would be involved.
Our mission is to provide this type of historical information in an intriguing format for those that do not have the resources to physically visit these locations.
Thank you for your time.
Sincerely,
Greg Gordon

I am a recent archaeology graduate (B.A.) and dug at Sepphoris last year. I'm always
surprised to hear comments about archaeologists and Biblical Scholars not being
able to resolve their differences. I can't see that archaeological evidence should threaten
anyone's spiritual faith......
Also- you and Marianne Sawicki have me running scared in pursuit of a good graduate

Brown).

Thank you for posting this information. I had been led to believe, by several "scholarly" books, that there was little or no evidence of buildings used as synagogues (assemblies) prior to the establishment of normative Judaism in the 2nd century CE. You seem to have proven these people wrong. This will definitely help me in my present writing project. Thanks!

Thank you for your mavellous service!! I am a student at St Andrews University, New Testament Studies, and have a deep concern of relationship between the temple and the synagogues. First of all, it is a quite impressive in viewing your challenge to the present "hermeneutics of suspicious" of modern (biblical, ancient) historians if we face the grey areas in synagogue studies. And, I am very appriciating your investigation to the relationship between the temple and the synagogues that is unreasonably neglected or negated factors in the study of the first century Judaism. Lots of materials provided by this site will be illuminated by other on-going reserches of synagogues. Thank your contribution.

Are there any good indices for Josephus' work? For example, I've heard three different pastors reference Josephus' description of the thickness of the Temple veil and each is vastly different. Are there any independent indices to help me find historical "data" in his writings other than what is included in the back of the complete works?

Hi
I have always wanted to know the answer to this question and I do not have anyone to ask. Since the yearly scarifice of atonement has not been done since the destruction of the temple, how are the Jewish people forgiven for their sins?
If you could tell me where to look for the answer I would be very appreciative. The lives of Gods chosen people have become very important to me in the last year but I do not know where to learn more about them.
Thank You

I discovered your Page in the course of researching some material about Tzippori. My 13 year old daughter and myself are to be volunteer hosts at an exhibit of a mosaic floor from that town.
I enjoyed reading your material, and it does resonate with me, an observant and a learning (not learned) Jew.
I never had any inkling from my Talmudic studies to infer any tension between the bei k'nishta and the Holy Temple. However, your web page does raise interesting questions, and i shall pay more attention to this issue in the future. It does seem to me, that from biblical times, we have been strictly prohibited from sacrifices, except "...in the place that G-d chooses."
It is interesting to note, that, from Mishnaic times (at least) until today, we are prohibited from roasting meat for the Seder, so that there is no way whatsoever that it could be construed that the meat came from an illegitimate (outside the Temple) Paschal sacrifice. We even extend this prohibition to fowl, which was not in any case used for this purpose.
Of course, one could impose the interpretation that the strict prohibition came out the some tension between the synagogues and the Temple. But I've seen no evidence of that.
Thank you for your contribution to this area of scholorship.

First of all, I don't really think that the page was last updated on 12/31/69 as it is said in the
bottom of the first page of the site. If that were the case then, your research on synagogues,
which was done in '97, could not be there.
Besides that your site is truly well done. I appreciate all the work you've put into it.

What a great resource! I am writing my Ph.d. on the break between Christianity and Judaism. My final chapter is on the archaeological story as comparded with literary evidence of Jewish Christianity. Not sure how to tackle the subject, as yet, as it was difficutl to distinguish between Jews and Christians at first. I like the bibliography. Must fly. I have to lecture for the next three evenings on the first century backgoround of the New Testament. This evieng I am doing parables. I hope this makes sense, as I cannot see more thatn a foew words at a time of this comment. It's a great resource. Many thanks. Marianne Dacy.

I have only casually glanced at the material here ... but it looks very interesting. I do have a question though, Horsley and others strongly refute the concept of synagogues in the Land of Israel prior to 70 C.E.! My own observations at Gamla and at Masada are inconclusive. Yes, there are benches ... but are we looking at a Hellenistic-type of community hall?; what evidence is that any sort of religious activety was taking place?; the proseuche and the synagogos are two very different things. I would like to find out more ... it appears that synagogues and Galillee in the late Second Temple period is the direction my advisor wants me go in my masters work (he doesn't feel that First Temple work is historically viable!).

Interesting. But then, where did the rabbi's fit in? Did they preside at these extensions of the temple? But they were hostile to the temple and the priesthood and have always wanted to take advantage of conditions to dismantle the previous traditions and substitute their own. Did the priests put the rabbis in charge of an extension of the temple, like foxes set to guard a henhouse?

I wish I had more time to browse...but gotta work!
In your research, did you find that the synagogue (the later one) at Capernaum was a "show synagogue" meaning that it was built to attract Christians...it was built in the style of Roman temples and churches? I was told something like this and wanted to see if I understood correctly.
Thanks.

Hi Don! Congratulations on finishing your Ph.D. It's an awesome process, as we are learning. Your website is so cool. It must feel good to see your work in a different and exciting medium.
We feel so fortunate to be involved in the new technology of computers and "the Web." Take care--talk to you later, Robin and Jim
