At the end of October, plate and pledge giving for 2007 was about $13,300 below the projection for the year. Including net proceeds from the Country Fair, $16,000, and from Cemetery Operations, $8,000, the net operating deficit for the year stands at $30,000. While that is not a huge sum relative to the total operating budget of $635,000, there is some cause for concern.

First, it is important to note that the 2007 budget projects a $25,000 operating deficit - assuming the shortfall can be made up in giving and that all the budgeted expenses are incurred. Second, it may be possible to decrease spending slightly to reduce that number; however, the budget is already very lean, so sizeable cuts are difficult and painful. Any deficit incurred will be taken from the healthy operating reserves, which is not a long-term solution.

On the other hand, there is some hope for optimism. Giving has improved a bit in the second half of the year, so that the shortfall is smaller now than it was in May. It has been proven in the past, that this parish can and will respond when there is a need. Every member of the congregation needs to review their giving to see that pledges are up to date. In addition, parishioners should keep Pohick Church and its many good works in mind as year-end charitable contributions are distributed.

As the 2008 budget is created, it is critically important that there is an accurate estimate of proposed giving. For those that have not already made their pledge, please prayerfully consider making a pledge to the operation of the Church.
