2007 Country Fair

Thanks so very much to all who made the 62nd Annual Pohick Country Fair so successful. Attendance and receipts were up, but most importantly great fellowship and service were enjoyed. Many community families were introduced to wholesome fun and entertainment. Several Virginia/Pohick traditions and activities were preserved and presented: apple butter, turkey shoots, historical military encampments, early American, folk and contemporary music, pony rides, cotton candy, funnel cakes, homemade food and baking, hot dogs, flea market aka Hodge Podge, games for kids, tours of historic Pohick Church, and the Country Fair venue itself. Adults and young alike tested their throwing skills drenching VIPs and young folk in the new version of the dunk tank. Kids and families were smiling everywhere!

See Chet Liddle’s historical notes in the Fair book for more on the history and the community. Extra copies of the book are available at the Common Room communications table or from the Church office.

There was some concern expressed about the new ticket format. Many appreciated the simplicity, ease, and convenience - especially the workers at the booths receiving and counting them. Even with the change, the opportunities from the past remain. Donations can still be made to the Church in the name of the Country Fair.

The recycle program did not go quite as well as planned, but nonetheless, three large brute trash cans full of plastics, glass, and metal went to recycle rather than the landfill. Every little bit helps.

The Pohick people once again did well. Thanks go to the activity chairs and their teams, who are the real reason the Fair is so special and successful. Special thanks to the ever reliable folks who set up, take down, clean, and put away the power, booths, decorations, and all of the equipment each year.

Hodge Podge

Hodge Podge sent donations from unsold items to LCAC, the Protestant Women of The Chapel at Fort Belvoir, Catholic Charities of the Arlington Diocese, DC Special Olympics, and Goodwill Industries plus contributed articles before the Fair to the Assistant Rector’s office, the nursery, the Sunday School, children’s games at the fair, the Christmas Mart, a homeless family in the community, and to a member of the parish. In addition, it was a fantastically successful year monetarily.

Hodge Podge involves the best of the best. Thanks! The dedicated team of very tired workers was/is incredible - God bless! Appreciation goes to every parishioner who looked for months to find special “treasures” and to all who shopped ‘til they dropped.

There aren’t words to express Hodge Podge’s gratitude. The greater reward will be in heaven (God loves a cheerful giver).
