Biographical Sketches

SARAH MARIE BOOTH

Occupation: Student - 11th Grade. Current/Previous Church Committees & Related Activi­ties: Church School student and EYC member; Par­ticipated in two mission trips to help repair homes in 2002 and 2003; Chaired two separate coffee house set-up committees; An active acolyte serving about every five weeks; Active youth choir member; Assist Frances Sessums (DRE) with childcare during staff meetings; I am the weekend sexton. Community Participation: Participated in the STAR tutoring program at Hayfield Secondary; National Honor Society; Volunteered with children and adults who have developmental disabilities through Fairfax County Therapeutic Recreational Services and Men­tal Retardation Services. Personal Ministry: I want to use my talents and gifts to give back to God and the church. As a vestry mem­ber, I would be providing my perspective as a young person on the issues of parish life. I look forward to communicating the actions of the vestry to the youth and bringing their thoughts back to the church.

Occupation: Substitute teacher. Current/Previous Church Committees & Related Ac­tivities: Neighborhood Lay Minister; Teller; Greeter;Apple Butter since 1982; Shrine Mont since 1986; Christmas Mart worker; Foyers; Lenten Program; Three-year term as Vestry Member; Sunday School Superintendent; Sunday School Teacher; Served on Lay Committee for three different Seminarians; Christmas Mart Chairperson; Martha Guild; Cursillo. Community Participation: E.S.L. teacher, Sully Senior Center. Personal Ministry: As I continue my spiritual journey,I try to fulfill my baptismal covenant. I try to “proclaim by word and example the Good News of God in Christ.” BCP p. 305. I try to make a friend, be a friend, and bring a friend to Christ. I will support the strong programs at Pohick, especially the Christian Education opportunities for all ages. I look forward to working with the Vestry and Clergy to meet our future challenges.

Occupation: Physicist. Current/Previous Church Committees & Related Activities: Evangelism Committee; Stewardship Committee; Brotherhood of St. Andrew. Community Participation: Graduate of Virginia Theological Seminary; Assisting Bishop Gray with his Sudan Outreach program; Assisting the Rev'd Jones in organizing the American Friends of the Episcopal Church in the Sudan. Personal Ministry: Help to make the Alpha Program a success at Pohick Church.

Occupation: Army - National Security Council.
Current/Previous Church Committees & Related Ac ­ tivities: Brotherhood of St. Andrew -former Vice President; Apple Butter; Repair days/clean-up days; Country Fair. Community Participation: Support to High School and club volley ball. Personal Ministry: I enjoy working with other people. I am able to organize and pace an effort. Marilyn and
I have come to love and value the members of Pohick Church.

Occupation: Fisheries Biologist, U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service. Current/Previous Church Committees & Related Activities: Past Vestry Member, St. James Episcopal Church, Charleston, SC; Usher at St. James and Pohick; Re­cently joined the Pohick Pickers. Community Participation: Member of West Springfield HS and Washington Irving MS PTA's; Assistant Scoutmaster, T-1853, Springfield, VA; Active in Brotherhood of St Andrew over forty years. Personal Ministry: To do my small part to support the clergy and lay leaders of Pohick as we continue to grow as a vibrant part of the community. If I can bring a smile with a guitar tune, that would be icing on the cake.

DOUGLAS LEE SMITH

Occupation: Engineer. Current/Previous Church Committees & Related Activi­ties: Vestry appointee; Kindergarten Church School Teacher; Brotherhood of St. Andrew; Planned Giv­ing Board of Trustees; Fair Parking Chairman; Apple Butter; Stewardship Commission; Every Member Canvasser. Community Participation: Cub Scout (Youth Protection and Treasurer) Leader; Swim Team Stroke and Turn Judge; Heart Association Fund Raising Volun­teer. Personal Ministry: I see my personal ministry is to help out in the church as needed and I feel that I have a personal calling to help influence this wonderful congregation to apply more of our vast resources towards helping people in need, not just in our community but throughout the world.

Occupation: Acting Director, Complaint Center Op-erations/Investigations, Department of Transporta­tion, Inspector General's Office. Current/Previous Church Committees & Related Activities: Lay Committee Member for Helen McKee; Choir Member; Initial Organizer and Chairperson of Newcomers Committee; Community Visitation; Coffee Hour Hostess; Foyers; Greeters; Country Store Hostess at Pohick Fair for 12 years. Personal Ministry: Given that I have been fairly inactive in recent years, I see this as an opportunity for God to use my skills wherever needed in supporting the programs and people within this wonderful parish.

Occupation: Senior Business Analyst. Current/Previous Church Committees & Related Activi­ties: Children's Chapel - 3 years; Sunday School - 6 years; Altar Guild - 6 months; Acolyte in the early to mid-1970's. In the first group of girls to become an acolyte at Pohick Church. Community Participation: Alexandria Knolls West Condominium Associated Handbook Committee; Habitat for Humanity; Christmas/Holiday Adopt-a-Family program through the Fannie Mae Foundation. Personal Ministry: I believe that I bring several strengths to the parish. I have a strong business back­ground that requires objectivity and logic. In addition, I have compassion for the youth of our church and have enjoyed working with the children. I have mainly worked with the pre-school and kindergarten classes at Pohick and love reaching out to their inquisitive and seeking minds. As Pohick expands into the twenty-first century, there are many ambitious programs to explore, such as the Parish House expansion, Pohick School, Pohick Adult Center and many others. I would like to be part of that exploration and growth.

Occupation: Contract Manager/Economist. Current/Previous Church Committees & Related Activities: Episcopal Community Council, Fort Leavenworth, KS, social chair; Pohick, Endowment Fund Board member. Community Participation: Mt. Vernon Yacht Club. Youth soccer coach - 6 years; Personal Ministry: I have an immediate and personal interest in children's and youth programs. I have a professional interest in financial management. And I have a personal belief that the church has a local re­sponsibility to assist people in need.
