Gunston Partners Program

To date, a volunteer has not made a commitment to run this essential program for the coming year. A volunteer is needed to step up and assume one of the Coordinator roles - either as the Pohick representative or as the Gunston School representative. Please contact Susan Homar as soon as possible so the success of the program is not jeopardized. The program is structured as a turn key operation that can easily be assumed by any individual. Ideally, two individuals are required to work together to administer the program - including interacting with the school officials, soliciting volunteers to be the tutors, and managing the weekly tutoring sessions. Please call or email Susan Homar at susan.homar@nciainsurance.com for more information on administering this fabulous and worthwhile program.

Lorton Community Action Center

Thanks to all who have contributed and continue to contribute to the Red Food Box. The numbers of families that rely on LCAC to fill the gaps in their weekly food budget continues to grow. The fundamental need is to meet the regular food needs. Please continue to support this community ministry by bringing in an item or two each week. Cereals, pasta and sauce, canned tuna, canned vegetables, and other non-perishable food items are needed and appreciated. In the next couple of months, a request will be made for the support of the Thanksgiving and Christmas Food Baskets.

Mission Trip

The Mission Trip from October 11 - 18 marks the fifth time a crew from Pohick will be venturing to New Orleans to help in the Rebuild Process. The young lady who has championed the effort for the last two and half years is leaving the project. She believes it is at a point where it can be sustained with other youth she has mentored, and she leaves with a strong conviction as to the impact that the volunteers from the Episcopal Church have had with those who have been served.

The following is a portion of her comments:  “There are a couple of houses we’re working on for families that aren’t able to contribute any money toward the work on their homes - either because of contractor fraud or because they didn’t qualify for federal money. It would be nice for me to leave knowing that we had some of the money in the bank for those projects. I hope you consider making a donation.

Thank you so much for your hard work and support over these last few years. I grew up with a sometimes rocky relationship with the Episcopal Church, but have seen in my time in New Orleans how powerful our church can be when we help others. We’ve been able to show thousands of folks in dire need down here that we care about them and ask nothing in return, and it seems to me that maybe we’re doing what we’re supposed to be doing, that in serving together, we both find God, and help others see God.  Thanks for helping make that work possible.”

To make a donation targeted at the Rebuild Project, please make a check payable to Pohick Church, and indicate on the memo line “Katrina Rebuild Mission.” The donations will allow for the purchase of building supplies to keep this project moving forward.
