It’s Not Grandmother’s Farm…

…but it may bring back memories of a place long ago. Country Fair time has arrived! Now is the opportunity to recapture the nostalgia of visiting Grandmother’s farm in the fall. The smell of smoke wafting up from cooking fires; the pleasant aroma of spices tickling the nose; and the beautiful colors of the changing leaves can be relived at Pohick Church on September 29, 30, and October 6, when apple butter is made at the Country Fair. It is Apple Butter Time, and it will be made the old fashioned way!

Eighty bushels of apples will be processed into the very famous Apple Butter - a best seller every year. Bring a paring knife and cutting board on Saturday, and hopefully stay all day Saturday and all day Sunday. Even an hour or two of volunteered time is useful! Any and all help is welcome! Work will start on Saturday at 7:00 am and very early on Sunday. Two kettles are also made on Fair Day and help is needed there also. A complete schedule is below and will be in the Church bulletin as the event draws closer. There will be plenty of work to keep everyone gainfully employed both days. It is a great opportunity to meet other parishioners of this great Church, and a very good chance of having just plain old fun!

Sugar: it takes about 200 lbs. to make the Apple Butter. Donations of sugar are needed. Please leave a bag or two in the kitchen marked “Apple Butter Sugar.” Brown “grocery bags” are also needed.

Every volunteer is needed. All volunteer help is indispensable. Without volunteers, it just won’t happen. Please plan to come and relive a part of life that has been all but forgotten!

Sugar Needed!

SUGAR, SUGAR! Not all the apples in the Garden of Eden would be enough to make apple butter if there were no sugar. It takes more than 200 pounds of sugar to make the six big kettles of apple butter produced to sell at the Country Fair. To donate bags of sugar, please put them in a grocery sack marked “For Apple Butter” and leave it in the Common Room kitchen. Questions? Contact Carolyn Cockroft at acarolyn@erols.com or cockroftc@theiacp.org.
