SENIOR WARDEN'S REPORT

September 2006

At the August 8 Vestry Meeting, Reverend Piver led the Spiritual Welfare of the Cure and Wayne Biggs led Compline. Senior Warden Pete Kind called the meeting to order and the minutes were approved.

Reverend Piver announced the Newcomer’s Reception is scheduled for August 27, and Jim From is taking over duties as Acolyte Master from Rusty Booth.

Senior Warden, Pete Kind, introduced a Vestry-gram from Vonne Troknya referencing the repair of bricks on the walkway from Colchester Road. The immediate problem has already been fixed, however, there was discussion of the need for frequent repair due to damage made by moles. Ken Wrona will take action to investigate more permanent solutions.

Junior Warden, Ken Wrona, announced there are two bids on Parish House roof repair, and a third is expected. The costs will be discussed with the Finance Committee, and then brought to the Vestry. The soffit repair and exterior painting of the Parish House is ongoing. The air conditioner for the nursery should be fixed by August 9. The gravel in the courtyard area adjacent to the nursery and Common Room entrance must be replaced. Removal of dead trees and repair actions related to the picnic and fairground areas were discussed. A work day is scheduled for August 26.

Treasurer, Reed Heddleston, reported that income and expenses are in the center of the historical range.

Planning and Policy Commission: Pete Kind/Wayne Biggs. In continuation of church visits and planning on convention issues, Ken Evans reported on a visit with Truro Church. Pete Kind reported on the Planning and Policy Commission meeting and presented for review and comment a draft questionnaire to help determine Pohick understanding and feelings. Pete also reported on the Building Committee meeting with the Architects.

Resources: Reed Heddleston/Greg Wise. Greg passed out copies of the current draft personnel policy in preparation for discussion and approval at the September meeting.

Mission and Outreach: Doug Smith. Doug reported that there will not be a picnic for the homeless this year, however, it is being arranged to provide tickets and transportation for homeless in supported shelters to attend the Country Fair. Pohick members may donate their tickets to the homeless by returning the tickets with payment. Doug announced that the Washington Post carried a nice article on adult mission work repairing homes in Lousiana. The Pohick discussion forum on the mission trip was well attended. School supplies were solicited and provided to the Lorton Community Action Center. Doug brought up discussion on the Eagle Scout orienteering project. Ken Wrona will speak with the parties involved.

Pastoral Care: Robin Teale. Robin discussed the recent facilitated conference on bereavement support and options for Pohick.

Christian Education: Neil Hogg. Neil reported that Vacation Bible School graduation went well. He noted the community outreach to students who are not current members of Pohick Church. He announced the Ice Cream Social will be held between services on September 10, the Activities Fair, and the first day of Sunday School on September 17. Neil also highlighted the poor appearance of areas, including the paint in the Common Room. Ken Wrona said we will include painting in the next budget.

Stewardship: Jane Thurston/Edwardene Pitcock. Planning continues for the fall stewardship campaign, meeting again Saturday.

Service and Fellowship: Joe Moran. Vestry members are asked to bring dishes to the Newcomers Reception August 27.
