Foyers

The French word foyers means a hearth or fireside, suggesting a small group, relaxed, and open to one another. Within the Pohick community, Foyers is a means of forming small groups of people in a relaxed atmosphere that enables them to get to know each other. The goal of Foyers is simply to be what Christians are: groups of people who gather together and “love one another.” As an extension of the existing Pohick community, Foyers is open to all, with the concepts of caring, sharing, and growing to know and love one another. Reconciliation and renewal are the dominant threads.

Fall Foyer’s groups are now being formed. Random groups of six to eight people are created to include individuals and couples that sign up to be a part of Foyers. Each group develops its own schedule to meet in the homes of group members for a simple meal and relaxed conservation. Each individual or couple is responsible for hosting one meal during a Foyers cycle. Meeting dates and times are determined by group consensus. Typically, groups assemble for an evening meal, but breakfast, brunch, or lunch are also possibilities. Foyers groups discuss a wide variety of topics during their gatherings including, the Episcopal Church, family, politics, sports, food, music, etc. Foyers events are always a learning experience about community happenings, current events, individual personalities, and family happenings. New groups are formed twice a year.

Mike and Judy Schmid will be assuming Foyers responsibilities from Don and Darlene O’Connell. The O’Connell’s have done an outstanding job for the last 17 years, and have earned a well deserved rest. Pohick deeply appreciates Don and Darlene’s contribution towards making the Pohick community much stronger. Also, thanks to Tom Bland who headed up the Spring Foyers session. The Schmids have participated in Foyers for the last seven years, and have found it to be a primary means to develop new and strong relationships with many Pohickians.

New members for the Fall are strongly encouraged. Just talk to Mike and Judy at Church or email them at Michael.e.schmid@lmco.com. Those that signed up at the Spring Activities Fair, will be included in the new Fall groups. There will also be an opportunity to sign up at the Fall Activities Fair in September. The deadline for joining the Fall Foyers groups is September 30.
