SENIOR WARDEN'S REPORT
Peter Kind, Senior Warden

September 2005

Two Vestry meetings and events will be covered in this article, and in the interest of time and space, comments will be abbreviated and consolidated.

Steve and Santos Garcia joined the BSA for breakfast and thanked the BSA and Pohick for their support. It is just over a year now since Steve’s horrific accident, and his spirit and progress are impressive and an inspiration to all. Seeing his enthusiastic smile and optimism are priceless. Thanks so very much, Steve.

The road request is finally progressing to contract with completion now projected by the end of the year. It has been necessary to approve an additional $3000 for construction and up to an additional $3000 for surveying, marking, and associated services. These were approved after considerable preparation and discussion. An environmental escrow bond of $5800 has been posted with Fairfax County. The bond is expected to be returned at completion.

A new air conditioner has been installed in the upper area of the Common Room at a cost of $3800. The failed unit was over 20 years old.

The Senior and Junior Wardens and the Rector signed the architecture and engineering contract with Kerns Group Architects. This is a major step forward in our strategic planning and our current and future service.

There has been a strong church attendance throughout the summer. Treasurer Ken Evans has reported that plate and pledge are above historical levels. The projected deficit this year has been reduced from over $30,000 to less than $9,000. Fifty two newcomers were introduced and welcomed. Great going, folks! Keep it up and invite more to join.

Activities have been highlighted by a very successful parish retreat at Shrinemont, Youth Mission trip and Vacation Bible School (79 students and 33 staff members). Mary and Jeff Miriam hosted an enjoyable fellowship for the choirs and musicians. The picnic for the homeless was well attended and supported.

With great sadness, farewells have been said to the Minister of Music, Victoria Shields Harding, and Youth Director, Mari Lynn Bland, as they go on to new chapters in their lives. Vicky has led the choirs, the musical services and the musical inspiration for seven wonderful years. Mari Lynn has given the youth new insights and spiritual witness of someone who is close to where they are in life. Both have given vitality, spirit, songs, and messages that stay in the hearts of the congregation. Godspeed to both, and looking forward to a continuing fellowship.

All is not lost. Jennifer Crump-Strawderman is taking over as Youth Director, continuing four years of service with them in varying capacities. Mason Botts reported to the Vestry that there are several high quality candidates for the Minister of Music position. There may be temporary music support for services, but there will be a permanent leader in place soon.
