SENIOR WARDEN'S REPORT
Peter Kind, Senior Warden

At 7:30 pm on June 14, 2005, the Vestry Meeting began with the Spiritual Welfare of the Cure and Compline led by Father Binder and Greg Wise. Seat and voice was granted to Anne Poad, who gave a briefing on the Magnetic Church conference and her insights focusing on helping people move from despair to hope. Anne strongly recommended the Vestry attend future sessions with the next one being on November 18-19.

Father Binder thanked the Vestry for its work in presenting the Volunteer Breakfast on June 12. He announced that there would be presented for confirmation, reception or reaffirmation fifteen young people (including one from Christ Our Lord Church) and nine adults during Bishop Gray’s visitation on June19. He also stated that Mount Vernon has requested that Pohick’s 1838 painting of Pohick Church, which has been on loan to them for three years, be extended for another year for display in their board room. The Vestry approved the extension.

Reverend Piver gave a reminder concerning the June 15 visit to the National Cathedral.

The Senior Warden read a Vestry-Gram related to letters of condolences to Parish members. After discussion, action was assigned to the Worship Committee. Mike Wooten volunteered to do the letters until the committee finalizes actions.

A second Vestry-Gram addressed facilities in the church for handicapped personnel. After supportive discussion, the matter was referred to the property committee for study and recommendations. Pete added his thanks to the Vestry for their 100% participation and enthusiastic support of the Volunteer Breakfast.

The Junior Warden reported on a sensitive cemetery issue, and the upgrade of the kitchen range hood that now meets code.

Jim Hayes reported that the road contractor was unwilling to contract at less than $38,000 for construction of the entrance to the Rectory at Route 1 and Pohick Road. After considerable discussion about the timelines and cost of alternatives as well as safety of the congregation, the Vestry voted to authorize an additional $3,000 to the previously authorized $35,000 and subsequently, $3,000 for Burgess and Niple for compacting measurement and other services. These are authorizations only; the permit approval is still needed to proceed. A letter is being drafted to Supervisor Hyland requesting his assistance in getting Fairfax Country to process the paperwork expeditiously. The actual work is estimated to take 6-8 weeks.

In conjunction with the road discussion, Treasurer Ken Evans summarized the impact of funding decisions on the building account this year. The approximately $99,000 in the bank at the start of the year will be reduced to about $32,000 upon completion of stated projects.

The Worship Commission reported that the Sounds of Pohick Concert was very successful. Thanks very much to Vicky and all who participated in performing or listening.

Christian Education needs one more male chaperone for the mission trip in July.

The DSL line has been installed at the Church to provide better service for staff, worshipers and others visiting the Pohick website. Thanks to Dick Heintze and Randy Brooks for spearheading it.

Reverend Piver led closing prayer.
