EFM Education for Ministry “Community” is a term used frequently to refer to an immediate living area. But, “community” also refers to the environment in which Christ wants to “. . .unite ourselves with others to acknowledge the holiness of God, to hear God’s Word, to offer prayer, and to celebrate the sacraments.” (BCP p. 857) The first Christians gathered in small groups for consolation and inspiration. These small communities celebrated the resurrection of the Lord, and the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles. The EFM program operates on the principle of small “communities of learning” where Christians are drawn together to worship, study, and reflect upon Christ in personal lives. Participants learn the meaning of ministry in Christ’s name. Groups of students, no fewer than six and no more than twelve, gather together in a seminar setting. Students are free to raise questions and express doubts about faith, scripture, the church’s history, and theology without being criticized or judged by others. The four year program offers participants the opportunity to examine and reflect upon personal experiences in terms of a newly found understanding of Christian teachings. EFM helps students to move beyond simply affirming the greatness of the Christian message to actually experiencing its impact on individual lives. During the next few weeks, additional information will be made available to encourage participation in the EFM program. For specific information, contact Pohick’s EFM Mentors: Charlotte Knipling, Denise McHugh, or Bill Stewart.
