Church Memorial Pew Seat Cushions, Design and Symbolism This
is another in a series of articles that will be written about the Pew Seat Cushion #14 - Purchased by D. McArty. Title: Mount Air. Symbolism: “Mount Air” was the home of the McArty family, who were closely associated with Pohick Church. Designed by Leslie Ariail. Needleworker: Leslie Ariail. Given to the church by Mrs. John Connelly, in memory of her husband John Connelly, Sr. The cushion was begun in 1991, and dedicated in 1994. Pew Seat Cushion #15 - The Rector’s Pew. Title: The Work of the Lord. Symbolism: An open Bible and candles, lighting the way of life through God’s word. Designed by Elizabeth Bixby. Needleworker: Louise Pannill. Given by the Ann Mason Guild. The cushion was begun in 1983, and dedicated 1986.
Pew Seat Cushion #17 - Historic Pew used by “Most respectable inhabitants and housekeepers.” Title: Wells Cathedral kneeler design. Symbolism: The rose is an emblem of love and beauty consecrated to the Virgin. The form of the cross grew from early origin, and is formed by a vertical straight line, which represents light, otherwise fire, striking from heaven, crossing the horizontal line, which represents water. Fire and water become united symbolizing creation. Designed adapted to suit the pew seat cushion by Joan A. Stanford. Needlworker: Edith Bartlett. Given by Elizabeth Scott, in honor of her grandchildren, Elizabeth and Scott Rome. Cushion begun in 1991, and dedicated in 1998.
