WARDEN'S REPORT The Route 1 widening effort is currently having its maximum impact on the Church. Access for automobiles is difficult at best. Be assured that this process has an end. There is a special concern for the continued safety of our historic church in the face of this heavy construction work. A number of round reflectors have been placed on the Route 1 wall and the church building. These reflectors are monitored regularly for movement by the construction supervisor with laser detectors. So far, the instrument readings have given no cause for alarm. Thanks to Jim Hayes for his diligent stewardship. Jim has remained as the church’s point of contact for the construction project to promote continuity. A related sub-project is the re-routing of the Rectory driveway to the light signal at Pohick Road. This project is forced by the fact that the existing exit, which had become increasingly hazardous to negotiate, is closed off permanently as part of the road work. Just this week, all of the administrative barriers to the commencement of work were finally overcome, and actual contracting proceeded. Incidentally, this improvement is not just a Rectory issue. Some day in the future, this will be a major entrance to the church property. There is a light at the end of this long tunnel. On the cemetery front, county officials recently verified that Pohick Cemetery is the final resting place of the first Fairfax County law enforcement officer to die in the line of duty. Officers and officials held a commemorative ceremony at the grave site, and they have signaled their intent to observe and remember this historic link with the Church in the future. Take a look at the steps at the west entrance. Senior Warden Pete Kind, Sexton John Sessums, and Bill Bland did some mighty fine patchwork to fill cracks and replace some crumbling steps. Eventually, the steps will be completely redone, but these temporary repairs are just what the doctor ordered for now.
