April is a very busy month for health activities at Pohick Church.

On April 13, LIFELINE SCREENING will be held at Pohick Church from 9:00 am until 4:30 pm. Screenings will cover strokes and osteoporosis. If interested, please call for an appointment. For those that would like to have the exam, but cannot not afford the fee, there are a few vouchers for free screenings. Call Carol Heddleston for more information.

An adult CPR and AED class will be held on April 16 at 9:00 am for Brotherhood of St. Andrew members, and anyone else who might want to be trained in this life-saving procedure.

On April 24, there will be a Blood Drive with the INOVA bloodmobile at the church from 9:00 am until 1:00 pm. Thirty-six volunteers will be needed to hold this event.

On April 30, there will be a CAREGIVER’s CONFERENCE at Westminister at Lake Ridge from 8:30 am until 4:00 pm. A flyer will be posted on the bulletin board with more information about this important topic.

While considering the LIFELINE SCREENING, here is some additional information about osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is a silent disease afflicting many Americans that are unaware that their bone health is in jeopardy. It affects both men and women, and most people do not know they have the condition. Ten million Americans over the age of fifty have osteoporosis. Each year, about 1.5 million of those afflicted suffer a bone fracture related to this condition. Osteoporosis can be prevented, reduced, and treated. It does not have to be part of the aging process. There is a heredity factor, but routinely including enough calcium and vitamin D in the diet at every age, being physically active, not smoking, and limiting alcohol, can all reduce risk. If a bone density test reveals osteoporosis or its early stage, osteopenia, medication can be prescribed that will prevent the situation from worsening and may even reverse some of its effects.

This test is being offered through Lifeline Screening. It only takes a few minutes, and it is totally painless. Please take advantage of this opportunity.
