Senior Warden's Report
April, 2004
Easter is almost upon us! Special events during
March included an excellent Shove Tuesday Pancake Supper - provided by
the EYC, Lenten Suppers and study sessions (standing room only for Father
Binders’ session on The Da Vinci Code), the BSA St. Patrick’s
Day Dinner, the EYC Retreat 26-28 March and the Girl Scouts had a wonderful
turnout for Girl Scout Sunday.
Now, notes from our March Vestry meeting:
- Roberta Fede presented a report on the Capital Campaign
Committee’s progress. The next step in the process is to select
a consultant. The committee is very close to being able to present a
recommendation to the Vestry. The consultant will begin with a feasibility
study. This study will involve interviews, surveys and demographic analysis.
This study will provide the basis for a go –no go decision on
the campaign. Roberta and her committee are doing an excellent job.
- Father Binder announced that Bonnie Johnson would be
leaving her position as youth director immediately. Bonnie is moving
out of the area. Father Binder recognized Bonnie for the great job she
has done as the youth director. She will be missed. Bonnie has agreed
to continue to lead the youth mission in July. Fr. Binder will be forming
a Search Committee to fine-tune the position description and begin the
search for a candidate.
- Father Binder announced that Pohick would receive a
second seminarian. Helen McKee will join us very soon.
- Elections were held for the Region VI and Diocesan Council
Representatives. Don O’Connell and Ann Poad were reelected to
the Region VI Council. Don serves as President of the Council and Ann
as the Secretary. Darlene O’Connell was reelected and John Pasour
elected as delegates to the Diocesan Council. Thanks to all for serving.
- The Vestry continued to review the Strategic Plan and
hopes to complete their review at the next Vestry meeting. This is a
lengthy process and involved process involving the discernment of the
great input from the congregation and Parish forums. The Vestry updates
the Strategic Plan bi annually.
- Jim Hayes, Junior Warden provided an update on the Route
1 construction project. Jim continues to work with the Virginia Department
of Transportation (VDOT) on our traffic pattern and issues dealing with
protecting our property during construction. The VDOT is looking into
extending the timing for the light on the Old Colchester road to aid
in leaving the Church property. Jim also announced that the water project
should be completed in April. Finally, Jim stated that the entrance
to the Parish Hall is being repainted and an anonymous donor has paid
for the purchase of a new phone system.
- Pete Kind, Treasurer, presented the February report.
February was a very good month, with income exceeding expenses.
Vestry Grams received this month (and answers) are as follows:
Q: The brick walkways in the courtyard are in need of repair. This is at least an annual issue and while most of the work is done with volunteer labor, there are better alternatives. We should consider having the walks replaced with bricks on a solid concrete base. By selling memorial bricks, this project has the potential to pay for its self and to generate income for our buildings and grounds in the future. On the various web pages, the price for a memorial 4X8 brick ranged from $100 to well over $500. The cost organizations paid to buy the bricks and to have them engraved was $40 to $75 each.A: This is an excellent idea! The suggestion has been given to the Capital Campaign Committee to incorporate into their overall capital program.
Q: I believe that the placement of this question “Have You Remembered Pohick in Your Will?” is inappropriate. If it appeared on a different page of the insert, I believe that it would be more effective and more seemly. (Note: The question was placed in the Sunday bulletin just below the Diocesan Cycle of Prayer).
A: We agree. The question will be relocated.
