NEEDLEWORK AT POHICK CHURCH

Pohick Church Memorial Pew Seat Cushions, Design and Symbolism

This is another in a series of articles that will be written about the

Pohick Church pew cushions. These articles will be very useful for

those planning to become a docent of Pohick Church.

Symbolism: organist and choir of Pohick Church with the Tracker organ, which was built specifically for the church in 1968. It is highlighted by religious musical motifs signifying the dedication of Pohick's music to God. Designed by Kenneth C. Stanford. Needleworkers:   Louise Pannill and Edith Bartlett. Given by Louise Pannill in memory of her relatives. The cushion was begun in 1989, and dedicated February 1999.

Pew Seat Cushion #6 - Used by “Most respectable inhabitants and housekeepers.” Title:   Wells Cathedral kneeler. Adapted by Joan Stanford Jeffries to suit the pew seat from a booklet on kneelers in the Wells Cathedral of Wells, England. Needleworkers: Jacqueline Wells and Joan Stanford Jeffries. Given by Paul and Paula Johnson in memory of the Johnson family. The cushion was begun in 1988, and dedicated in July 2001.

Pew Seat Cushion #7 - Said to have been occupied by Parson Weems when visiting Pohick Church. Title: Stewardship. Symbolism:  The lantern lighting the way, flanked by the hands of fellowship and the keys of the church, held together by the three circles denoting the Holy Trinity. It is embellished with acorns symbolizing the strength of the mighty oak.   Designed by Anne Flory and Kenneth C. Stanford. Needleworkers: Anne Flory, Anne Gaillard, and Jean Turner. Given by William E. S. Flory in memory of his wife, Anne Flory.   The cushion was begun 1981, and dedicated April 7, 1991.

Pew Seat Cushion #8 - Used by “Most respectable inhabitants and housekeepers.” Title:   Wells Cathedral Kneeler. Adapted by Joan Stanford Jeffries to suit the pew seat from a booklet on kneelers in the Wells Cathedral of Wells, England. Needleworkers: Amy White and Joan Stanford Jeffries. Given by Roy and E. Avery in memory of their parents: Harry Coleman and Lura R.D Avery, and Francis Terrell and Ethel Everhart Green. The Cushion was begun in 1989 and dedicated in January 1993. This cushion was awarded the Red Ribbon in the Woodlawn Needlework Exhibition in 1993.

Please note the beautiful altar carpet has been returned to the Church. Along with receiving a new backing, the carpet has been cleaned and blocked. These processes should help preserve the carpet. Treat it with loving care.

The annual Woodlawn Needlecraft Show is being held from March 1 thru March 31, 2005.   The cushion designed for Pew Seat 22, “Rockledge”, has been entered in the Woodlawn Needlecraft Show for 2005. This cushion was designed by Rev. N. Goldsborough and worked by Joan Stanford Jeffries.
