HEALTH NEWS Here are 10 things that can be done to help live longer, live better and live happier: 10: Be Informed! For trusted health information, here are three information sources: the US Department of Health and Human Services, and the National Women’s Health Information Center, 1-800-994-Woman and Healthfinder at www.healthfinder.gov. 9: Be Good to Bones! Be sure to replenish stock of calcium every day with plenty of foods like milk and dairy products, tofu, green vegetables, fortified juices, and bread. Speak with a doctor about calcium supplements. 8: Avoid Illegal Drugs and Alcohol! For women, the definition of moderate drinking stops at one glass per day. As far as illegal drugs, there is no such thing as moderate use. 7: Take Medicine Wisely! Read labels and follow the instructions. Make sure to tell the doctor about any other medications or supplements being taken. This includes herbal or non-traditional supplements. 6: Play It Safe! Buckle up. Wear a bike helmet. Use smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Wear sunscreen and UV protected sunglasses. Use common sense. 5: Get Checked! Get regular checkups, preventative exams, and immunizations. Don’t forget self-exams, too. 4: Don’t Smoke! This is the leading preventable cause of death in this country. 3: Eat Smart! It is the secret to good health. Eat plenty of fruits, vegetables, and grains. Enjoy a variety of foods and balance foods from each food group. 2: Get Moving! The other secret to good health is to do 30 minutes of physical activity each day. This can be accumulated over the day and will make a big difference. 1: Be Happy! Take personal time. Get connected with family, friends, and community. Do enjoyable things. Remember to make time for the individual and seek connections that soothe the soul.
