Pohick Church Memorial Pew Seat Cushions - Designs and Symbolism
Pew Seat Cushion #1 - Magistrates and Strangers. Title: Men of Pohick. Design depicts Pohick Church with the busts of men through the ages. Figures include from George Washington in the forefront to present-day vestrymen, who have supported and worked for the Church.
The cushion was designed by Admiral William M. Zobel. Needleworker: Jane Fairman. Given by Ann Mason Guild. Cushion was begun in 1982 and dedicated in 1986.
Pew Seat Cushion #2 - Vestrymen and Merchants. Title: Pohick Vestry. Symbols include the grapes, wine and chalice, which are symbolic of the Holy Eucharist that Vestry members partake of and help to serve.
The cushion was designed by Kenneth C. Stanford. Needleworkers: Susan Powers and Edith Bartlett. Given by Mr. and Mrs. R. Bartlett and family, in memory of Grace Naus Bartlett, mother of Robert Bartlett, 1909-1984. Cushion was begun in 1981 and dedicated in 1987.
Pew Seat Cushion #3 - George Mason's Pew. Title: George Mason, the Statesman. The symbolism included on the cushion includes political articles like the Bill of Rights and the Virginia and U.S. Constitutions that are associated with the achievements of George Mason.
The cushion was designed by Mary Lee Link Allen. Needleworker: Betsy Worthington. Given by Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Smith, Jr. in memory of their son, Peter Burrows Smith, and their parents, Samuel Burrows Smith, Thekia Anne Knoblock, and Eugene Conrad Knoblock. Cushion was begun in 1989 and dedicated in 1991.
Pew Seat Cushion #4 - George Mason's Pew. Title: Gunston Hall. The design represents a copy of a water color of Gunston Hall, home of George Mason, which was painted by Elizabeth Bixby.
The cushion was designed by Elizabeth Bixby. Needleworkers: Ruth Baynard, Jacqueline Wells, and Joan A. Stanford. Given by Elizabeth Bixby in memory of Brig. Gen. Charles Moore Walson (1883-1959) and Mrs. Bonnie Miller Walson (1892-1987), parents of Elizabeth Bixby. The cushion was begun 1984 and dedicated in 1990. This cushion was awarded a RED Ribbon at the Woodlawn Needlecraft Show.
