Notes from our January meeting:
- Father Binder initiated a discussion concerning
our compliance with parishioner’s desires to restrict certain
contributions, as offered in the 2004 Stewardship Campaign. The issue
concerned checks marked as restricted to “Parish” use or
“Parish and Diocese” only, but the contributors had not
made an annual pledge. After examination of our procedures, it was determined
that we in compliance. The treasurer was instructed to institute an
additional check to insure we remain compliant.
- Father Binder reported that the new museum being
planned for Mount Vernon would include a replica of George Washington’s
Pohick pew. This should provide an excellent opportunity to encourage
the many visitors to Mount Vernon to stop by Pohick.
- Jim Hayes, Junior Warden gave the Vestry an update
on the Route 1 construction. Construction could begin as early as March
2004.
- Jim Hayes also gave an update on bringing county
water to the grounds. The county has given approval to the final plans.
Construction should begin this spring.
- Pete Kind, Treasurer, presented the final report
for calendar year 2003. The operating fund ended the year with a $23,000
deficit. This “deficit” includes the transfer of $10,000
into our Capital Improvement Fund, making the "real deficit"
that much less. This fund is intended to cover future facility needs.
This follows two years of surpluses ($10,000 and $8000), which also
included banking $10,000 each year into our Capital Improvement Fund.
Capital Improvement and Memorial Funds are up $38,000 over last year.
The overall financial posture of the Parish remains very strong, with
an extremely positive trend of investing in our future.
- Jane Thurston provided an update on the Stewardship
Campaign. As of this date, we have exceeded the pledges for the previous
year. 201 units have pledged $460,605 compared to 222 pledging $455,924
last year. This is very good news and brings us closer to balancing
the budget in 2004. The Stewardship Committee continues to excel! Thank
you for all your hard work and thanks to our congregation for the great
participation.
- Blaise Burry presented a report on the American
Anglican Council (AAC) “Plano East” Conference, held January
9-10, 2004 in Woodbridge, VA. Many of the tough issues facing the ECUSA
were discussed. Details are on the Internet at http://www.americananglican.org/.
- Nicole Fluet provided an update on youth activities.
The youth group held a very successful “coffee house” in
November. Another is planned in May. The Pohick Youth Groups continue
to be very active. Future activities include a Super Bowl Party, Visit
to the Fairfax, Winter Ski Trip and Pancake Supper.
Upcoming Events:
- Diocesan Council, and it is on Jan 30-31
- February 1, Newcomers Reception
- February 7, Chili Cook-Off and Silent Auction
- February 8, Scout Sunday
