THE NEEDLEWORK OF POHICK CHURCH Jacqueline Wells In April 1972, the late Rev. Albert Jones requested needlework seats for the two Chancel Chairs along with two kneelers for the chairs. Marjorie Sinclair was the designer of the Chancel Chair seats and Joan Stanford Jeffries did the needlework. The needlework seats took 17 months to complete. The two kneelers were designed by Marjorie Sinclair and worked by Anne Flory and Elizabeth Keener. The kneelers were dedicated in August of 1976. The beautiful Banners in the Church, the “Sea of London” and the “Diocese of Virginia Banner”, were completed in September of 1978. Joan Stanford Jeffries worked the “Sea of London” banner, and Elizabeth Keener worked the Virginia Banner. After taking 15 months to complete, the Banners were first carried on Palm Sunday 1979, and officially dedicated in November 1979. On March 13, 1979, the “Diocese of Virginia Banner” was carried down the aisle in the Washington Cathedral for evensong and the dedication of Bishop Peter Lee. The Bible Markers for the lectern
were designed by Betty Bixby, and embroidered by Joan Falls and Teddy
McCracken. Joan Stanford Jeffries assembled them.
