December 2009

Welcome to the Pohick Post Online!

Although the recent weather has been anything but winter-like, the season of Advent has nevertheless arrived. Time to set out the Advent Wreath, ready the Christmas decorations and prepare our hearts for our annual celebration of Christ's birth.

Ever wonder why St. Nicholas holds such a prominant place in this season, both in the church and the secular world? Read the answer in this month's Rector's column.

Are your affairs in order? Read our Assistant's column to find out why Advent is a good time to make sure they are.

In terms of activities, there is so much going on this month to bring joy to every heart, including the Christmas Party for the Homeless (Dec 7, 5 pm), Breakfast with Santa (Dec 12, 9 am), and our annual Christmas Pagaent (Dec. 13, 4 pm). Closer to the holiday, we'll continue our recent tradition of Lessons & Carols on the Sunday before Christmas (Dec. 20, 10 am; HE, 8 am), while offering our two services on Christmas Eve (6 and 10:30 pm) and one on Christmas Day (10 am).

Before we get there, we'll be holding our Annual Parish Meeting on Sunday, Dec. 6 at 10:30 am. Read through the Vestry Nominee Profiles in advance, while also taking a look at updates from our Wardens. In addition to the election, there will be reports from the clergy and vestry officers, as well as a presentation by the Renovations Committee.

Over the past few years, many within our congregation have lost loved-ones, making the holidays less than joyous. In recognition of this, we will again be offering our Blue Christmas service on Wednesday, Dec. 9 at 7:30 pm in the Church. We hope all participating will find from this time both comfort and peace.

Our Rector will be celebrating the 20th Anniversary of his Ordination to the Priesthood this month. The Vestry will be throwing a reception for him and his family after the 9 am service on Sunday, Dec. 13. Come be part of the festivities!

Finally, as our new Diocesan, Bishop Johnston, has called for a series of town-hall meetings to help inform the start of his episcopate. The meetings in our area will be held at St. Andrew's, Burke (6509 Sydenstricker Road), on Saturday, Dec. 5 at 10 am (adults) and 2 pm (Young people and Youth Ministers). If you are able, go and share your thoughts with our new bishop!
