December 2008

Welcome to the Pohick Post Online!

The season of Advent is upon us. It's a time of both joy and solemnity where we prepare our hearts for the coming of Christ at Christmas.

In our church, the Advent Wreath grows brighter each week as the Nativity nears. Read this month's Rector's Column to learn more about the history and meaning of this central liturgical symbol. Note also from the article that we will again enjoy the beautiful service of Lessons & Carols on the Fourth Sunday of Advent, Dec. 21 at 10 am (8 am Holy Eucharist).

While a joyous time for most of us, the holiday season can be difficult for those who have suffered a recent loss. Our Assistant writes about such struggles (page 5), as well as how we will be offering a Blue Christmas service on Wednesday, December 10 at 7:30 pm as a means of solace and support. All interested persons are invited to attend.

In a similar vein, many families are facing financial hardship during the holidays, particularly with the recent economic downturn. Read through this month's Outreach Column (page 6) to find out ways you can help with our Christmas baskets, Christmas Party for the Homeless (Dec. 8) and Breakfast with Santa (Dec. 13).

With an eye toward 2009, we will be holding our Annual Parish Meeting on the first Sunday of December (Dec. 7 this year) at 10:30 am. There we will hear reports on the state of the parish, as well as vote for five new vestry members. Read their biographical sketches here.

In addition, this year we will be voting to add a sixtenth elected vestry seat, dedicated to a Youth Representative. Please read through the proposed policy, endorsed by the Vestry, that will regularize the procedure for such an election. Its adoption will allow the congregation to ratify the two persons nominated by the young people this year to fill this one-year (initially staggered) term.

As per church canons, all Adult Communicants in Good Standing (age 16+) registered in the parish are eligible to vote, but must do so in person. If you are unsure of your status, please contact the parish office as soon as possible.

On another note, if you haven't yet turned in your 2009 pledge card, please take a prayerful moment to fill it out and do so. As of this writing we are two-thirds towards our goal of the $600,000 in pledges needed to keep Pohick's ministries continuing in the coming year. With the ecomonic challenges facing our community (this year especially) we need every family to lend their support!

Finally, you'll notice that with this month's E-Post we have switched to the use of Adobe Flash for the main body of articles. While most users will already have this plug-in installed, if you do not, download the free Flashplayer here. Once installed, simply click on the link below to access the webpage containing the articles. You may also download a pdf version.

As always, don't forget to send your Pohick Post Articles to Lori Buckius at raebuck@aol.com before the monthly deadline (15th). Pass on any comments or concerns about these pages in an email to Dick Heintze at heintzer@pohick.org or the Rector at dbinder@pohick.org.
