November 2008 Welcome to the Pohick Post Online! In November, we move into the holiday season, with All Saints' Day, Thanksgiving, and the start of the Advent season, leading us into Christmas. At Pohick, we observe all of these days with great joy and solemnity. On All Saints', we remember those loved ones and heroes of the faith who have gone on before, while at the same time baptizing into our communion new members of our Christian Family. Worship on Thanksgiving Day allows us to restore this civic holiday from an emphasis on turkey and football into the "Day of publick Thanksgiving and Prayer" that George Washington intended when he issued the First Thanksgiving Day Proclamation in 1789. And the start of Advent on November 30th allows us to prepare our hearts for the coming of the Christchild, which we celebrate at Christmastide. In this month's E-Post, our Rector reflects upon the Christian response of thanksgiving, even in light of the recent economic turmoil—a theme also echoed in the Assistant's Column. Our Outreach Chair writes about how we can help needy families at Thanksgiving, while our Director of Christian Education highlights our Advent Wreath Workshop and Dinner on Sunday, November 23 beginning at 5 pm. And, of course, our Annual Christmas Mart on November 20th not only gets us in the holiday mood, but it helps us support the worthy causes sponsored by our Ann Mason and Martha Guilds. In that same vein, during these challenging economic times, our ministries at Pohick need your continued financial support now more than ever, a point made especially in the Treasurer's Report. Likewise, our Stewardship Committee asks that you be generous in filling out your 2009 pledge cards, keeping with this year's slogan, "Give until it Feels Good!" Elsewhere, read about our fourth mission trip to New Orleans as well as the goings on in the Vestry, Property Committee, Anglican Communion and EYC. There's all this and much, much more in this month's edition of the E-Post! Don't forget to send your Pohick Post Articles to Lori Buckius at raebuck@aol.com before the monthly deadline (15th). Pass on any comments or concerns about these pages in an email to Dick Heintze at heintzer@pohick.org or the Rector at dbinder@pohick.org. Monthly Columns
