April 2009

Welcome to the Pohick Post Online!

Lent is drawing to a close, with one final Wednesday Evening Dinner and Study (April 1) before Holy Week. Even if you haven't attended any of the earlier ones, please join us for some wonderful food, fellowship, study and worship (6:30-8:30 pm).

Then, believe it or not, Palm Sunday is this Sunday (April 5)! Be sure to come out for the Procession of the Palms and the Dramatic Reading of the Passion at each of the three services.

That's not all. Come on out later in the week for Maundy Thursday (April 9, 7:30 pm) when we commemorate Christ's institution of the Last Supper and his subsequent arrest. There are still some time slots available for the Good Friday vigil where individuals or couples can watch and pray with Jesus for an hour in the vestry house; see the sign-up board in the Common Room. If you're unable to do that, sign up to spend an hour that night in prayer and private devotions at home.

On Good Friday (April 10), we'll gather for the three great hours when Christ hung on the cross (noon - 3 pm), with that time interspersed with readings, hymns, reflections from the pulpit, an outdoor walking of the Stations of the Cross, and a dramatic Passion Reading from the Gospel according to St. John. Come and stay for as much or as little as you are able.

This Year's Flame Walk on Easter Morn will have a different twist. We'll be walking the Paschal flame from the site of the earlier Pohick Church two miles south of our present location. Walkers should meet at the church by 4:15 am to be shuttled down there for the walk. Others are invited to greet them at the finale in front of the church at 5:30 am, where we'll light the new paschal candle, marking Christ's resurrection. Following the candlelight service inside the church, the Brotherhood of St. Andrew will serve traditional hot Cross Buns and Coffee in celebration of this joyous day.

Festival Easter services will follow at 7:45, 9:15 and 11:15 am, with an Easter Egg hunt for the children between the later two services. This year, look for the choir's rendition of Handel's "Hallelujah Chorus" as part of our Easter Festivities!
