February 2010

Welcome to the Pohick Post Online!

Remember the movie "Groundhog Day"? It's the one where Bill Murray plays a weatherman caught in a time-loop in snowy Punxsutawney, Pa on Groundhog Day (yes, the groundhog saw his shadow). Sound familiar? If so, it's because we too have been caught in a weekend weather loop of snow this year, from which there seems no escape!

Good thing we have the Internet these days, so that amid all the cancellations you can still keep abreast of the goings on at Pohick!

The foremost of these is the start of Lent on Ash Wednesday in the middle of the month (Feb 17). We'll offer services throughout the day (7 am, noon, 4:30 & 7:30 pm) to accommodate any work schedule. The following week, we'll begin our series of Lenten Potlucks, Studies and Services over the following five Wednesdays (Feb 24 - March 24), 6:30 - 8:30 pm. The studies are for students of all ages, with three offerings for adults:

  • Addiction & Grace, led by the Rector, will focus on Gerald May's classic book of that title, which, based upon psychological and neurological studies, greatly expands the definition of addiction. In essense, everyone is addicted to something, often without even knowing it. May's book explores the nature of these addictions, and how, through God's grace, we can break the cycle of dependency.

  • Women of the Bible, led by the Assistant to the Rector, will explore the lives of several of the outstanding women featured in the biblical narrative.

  • Christianity for Dummies, led by our Seminarian, will seek to answer the question, "What does it mean to be a Christian?" Through use of Scripture and the Book of Common Prayer, it will especially look to unpack theological terms often casually thrown around in the church.

Prior to all this, our Young People will be serving up Pancakes on Shrove Tuesday (Feb 16, 5 pm). Come and get 'um while they're hot!

In this month's EPost, our Rector shares some reflections from the Vestry Retreat about Mission and Maintenance-mindedness, inviting the congregation to reflect upon these during the season of Lent. Our Sr. Warden reports on the first full meeting of the new vestry, which received from our Treasurer the good news that we ended 2009 in the black! Thanks to all in the congregation whose generosity made this possible! Our Jr. Warden brings us up-to-date on the parish house renovations, as well as the new initiative to make our brick sidewalks more safe to walk on.

Elsewhere, there's news of the Ann Mason Guild's Chili Cook-off (Feb 6, 6pm, weather permitting), the Brotherhood of St. Andrew's Washington's Birthday Service, Breakfast and Address (Feb 15, 8 am), and the Martha Guild's Glories' Happy Hats Workshop (Feb 20, 10 am - noon).

Read about these events and issues and much, much more in this month's E-Post!

Remember, the main body of the E-Post is now published in Adobe Flash and requires the Flashplayer plugin. Download it here for free if you do not have it installed. You may also download a pdf version.

As always, don't forget to send your Pohick Post Articles and event photographs to Lori Buckius at raebuck@aol.com before the monthly deadline (15th).Pass on any comments or concerns about these pages in an email to Dick Heintze at heintzer@pohick.org or the Rector at dbinder@pohick.org.
