February 2009 Welcome to the Pohick Post Online! With the first snowfall of the year coming this past week, it's likely that the groundhog will see his shadow come February 2nd, meaning six more weeks of winter. In the church, three of those weeks will fall during Epiphany, since Lent begins somewhat late this year, with Ash Wednesday not arriving until February 25 (services at 7:00 am, noon, 4:30 and 7:30 pm). In the meantime, we'll have several weeks of festivities, beginning with the Rector and Mrs. Binder's annual EYC SuperBowl party at the Rectory. All of our young people are invited out at 6 pm for good food and Christian fellowship as we watch the big game on a thirteen foot, high definition screen! Later in the month, the Brotherhood of St. Andrew will be offering our annual George Washington service, Breakfast and lecture on February 16, this year featuring Mt. Vernon's Mary Thompson, author of a recent book on Washington's spiritual life. The following week, the Ann Mason Guild will be sponsoring their Chili Cook-off on February 21, while three days after that our young people will host a pancake supper on February 24, Shrove Tuesday. Lastly, we'll have a Red Beans and Rice dinner on February 28, helping to send another Pohick mission team to New Orleans to assist with the ongoing reconstruction effort there. Even more important than these events, however, is our faithfulness in Sunday worship, which will be our major emphasis in 2009, with the goal of Increasing Attendance and Participation in Sunday Morning Worship, Education and Parish Activities to Near Capacity Levels. Read about this, as well as about our Strategic Plan forums in this month's Rector's Column. February is also the month when Confirmation classes beging, with the Rev. Lyn Youll Marshall teaching the Adult Inquirers' Class during the Sunday School hour (Feb 1 onward) and the Rector meeting with our young people for Confirmation Class 5-6 pm on Sunday evenings beginning on February 8th. Please speak to either of them if you or a family member is interested in being confirmed, received or reaffirmed at Bp. Jones' visitation on June 14. You'll find these items and much, much more in this month's E-Post! Remember, the main body of the E-Post is now published in Adobe Flash and requires the Flashplayer plugin. Download it here for free if you do not have it installed. Then, simply click on the link below to access the webpage containing the articles. You may also download a pdf version. As always, don't forget to send your Pohick Post Articles to Lori Buckius at raebuck@aol.com before the monthly deadline (15th). Pass on any comments or concerns about these pages in an email to Dick Heintze at heintzer@pohick.org or the Rector at dbinder@pohick.org. |
