February 2006

Welcome to the Pohick Post Online!

Much to the disappointment of our kids, winter has been mostly AWOL in 2006. In the Church, the bigger news is this year's long Epiphany Season, which will last through all of February. In this month's E-Post, our Rector writes about this season's themes, highlighting especially the theme of Christian discipline and the many opportunities we have at Pohick this month to advance our own Christian journeys.

Good News from last month's Vestry meetings: We ended 2005 with a modest budget surplus. Even better, near the end of January we reached the $500,000 pledge mark for the first time in our church's history! That will allow our Finance Committee to revisit some of the cuts made to the 2006 budget back in December. Thanks to all of you for your support of the many good ministries coming out of Pohick!

At its January Retreat, the Vestry also determined its Commission assignments, which have been updated on the Vestry page of our Parish website. Have a look at that, as well as our updated Organizational Chart when you have a moment.

Even though Lent does not begin until March, there's still a lot going on this month. Mark your calendar for several upcoming events, including Boy Scout Sunday (Feb 5), the Washington's Birthday Service & Breakfast (Feb 20, 8 am), Chili Cook-off (February 25, 6-9 pm), and Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper (Feb 28, 5-7 pm), among others.

In late breaking news, at last week's Diocesan Council Bishop Lee called for the election of a Bishop Coadjutor next January. That person would eventually succeed Bishop Lee following his retirement, which would come no later than the Spring of 2010. The Council also bade a fond farewell to Bishop Gray, who is retiring to his home in Northern Indiana. Several resolutions were also passed, including one that committed our parishes "to seek the highest degree of communion possible with those members of the Body of Christ with whom we find ourselves in disagreement" in the recent human sexuality debates (R17s). For a refresher on these, as well as on Pohick's unique response, please visit our Anglican Communion News and Resources Page.

As always, please send your Pohick Post Articles to Lori Buckius at raebuck@aol.com before the monthly deadline (15th). Pass on any comments or concerns about these pages in an email to Dick Heintze at heintzer@pohick.org or the Rector at dbinder@pohick.org.
