Dante Alighieri   (1265-1321)
Born in Florence, Dante went on briefly to
become the mayor of that city in 1300.
Accused of corruption (a charge he
denied), he was sent into exile for the
remainder of his life.
During his exile, he wandered from city to
city, giving lectures on literature.
During about the last ten years of his life,
he composed The Divine Comedy.
