Reflection Questions for November 13

1. Foster alludes to the ways that the Discipline of Submission has been abused (p. 110). How have you seen this happen?

2. How does Foster distinguish between self-contempt and self-denial (p. 114)?

3. What is the freedom in submission (p. 111)? Have you entered into any experience of this?

4. What are the limits to submission (pp. 120–121)?

5. Of the seven acts of submission (pp. 122–123), which do you need to work on the most?

6. How might envisioning the church as “the fellowship of sinners” help us to better exercise the Discipline of Confession (p. 145)?

7. Foster mentions three things necessary for a good confession (pp. 151–153). Which of these do you find the most difficult to experience?

8. Foster also mentions three advantages to formalized confession (pp. 148–149). In light of these, how might you consider exercising the Rite of “The Reconciliation of a Penitant” (Book of Common Prayer, pp. 447ff)?
