We are proud to be able to say that Christian
Education receives a high priority at Pohick. Programs are well-funded
by the Vestry, and we enjoy the participation of many volunteers throughout
the year as Sunday School teachers, Vacation Bible School leaders, special
event and celebration coordinators, and EYC sponsors. The following
is a list of opportunities offered for children, youth and adults.
- Sunday School
- Nursery
- Children's Chapels
- Youth Group
- Confirmation
- VBS
- Adult Education
Sunday School
Sunday School is offered at Pohick for children
and youth three years of age through high school, as well as for adults.
Classes are held September through May from 10:1511:05 a.m. Registration
for young people is normally on the Sunday after Labor Day, with classes
beginning the following week, although students are welcome to enroll
at any time during the year. Children who attend the 9:00 a.m. service
follow behind the Crucifer at the end of worship and go directly to
their classes. The adult class is normally held in the Annex of the
Parish House and is led by the Rector or the Assistant.
-
Students in Pre-K through 4th Grade follow the Godly Play Curriculum, whose lessons are based upon biblical stories and themes found in Sunday worship.
- Pre-KKindergarten meet in Classroom E/F on the Parish House, Lower Level.
- Grades 12 meet in Classroom C/D on the Parish House, Upper Level.
- Grades 34 in Classrooms A & B, both in the Parish House

There is at least one Adult class offered each semester, with topics varying from year to year. In the Winter through Spring, one of the clergy conducts an Adult Inquirer's Class, which seeks to educate students about our Christian faith and Anglican heritage in preparation for Confirmation or Reception by one of our bishops in June. It is also a good refresher for present church members.
-
Classes meet in the Parish House Annex
-
Second classes (when offered) are in the Vestry House.
-
Nursery
A paid attendant is on duty at all Sunday services;
there are also two or more assistant volunteers. Infants through preschool
age are welcome. The nursery is located directly to the right of the
Common Room (lower floor of the Parish House). When the Common Room
is being used, please drop off and pick up children by using the outside
door to the nursery.
Children's Chapel and Children's Church
These ministries provide a way for our youngest worshipers to participate on their level of understanding in the "Ministry of the Word" portion of the 9:00 am service, while rejoining their families in the Church for Holy Communion after the Peace is exchanged.
-
Children's Chapel, which is for 3-year-old through Kindergarten students. It is a worship service with age-appropriate lessons which are based upon biblical stories and themes found in Sunday worship. Parents leave their pre-schoolers in Classroom E and Kindergartners in Classroom F on the Lower Level of the Parish House, a few minutes before the start of the 9:00 am service.
Children's Church is for First and Second Graders. It is a worship service for youngsters with a Bible Reading and age-appropriate Chapel talk. Parents drop off their children in Classroom C/D on the Upper Level of the Parish House a few minutes before the start of the 9:00 am service. When on our summer schedule, this age group meets at 10 am in Classrooms C/D for Godly Play.Youth Ministries
Pohick has a Primary EYC (Episcopal Young
Churchmen) for students in the fifth through sixth grade, a Jr. EYC for
students in the seventh through eighth grade, and a Sr. EYC for those
in ninth through twelfth grade. All three groups participate in service
projects, trips, retreats, and, of course, outings that are "just-for-fun!"
The usual meeting time is on Sunday evenings in the Parish House. See
our Youth Page for more details.Confirmation Classes
Either the Rector or the Assistant conducts
confirmation classes for youth in grades six through twelve during the
second half of the school year, normally on Sunday evenings 5-6 pm. The
Rector offers an Adult Inquirer's class concurrently during the Sunday
School hour. Both courses seek to educate students about our Christian
faith and Anglican heritage in preparation for Confirmation or Reception
by one of our bishops in June.Vacation Bible School
Vacation Bible School takes place every July
for one week from 9:0012:00 noon. We welcome students from around the local community to enjoy a time of worship, singing, bible lessons, arts and crafts, and games. On the concluding Friday, the children invite their parents to a concluding program that puts on display what they have learned and done throughout the week. This is a joyous event, which
offers a memorable
experience for all the children who come.
Alpha
Alpha. Begun at Holy Trinity, Brompton Road in London, this course has since spread around the world, offering an introduction to our Christian faith to those seeking spiritual nourishment. Pohick offers this dinner series once or twice a year in the evenings. Contact the Rev. Dr. Ruth E. Correll for more information.Education for Ministry
In 1985, a few stalwart parishioners formed the first Education for Ministry (EFM) class at Pohick, and since then it has met every year. A second class was added five years later. The EFM program, operated by the University of the South Theological Extension Center located in Sewanee, Tennessee, is a four-year program that focuses on the study of Holy Scripture, Church History and tradition, and theology. The comprehensive program emphasizes preparing students for ministry in Christ's name. Since 1990, mentors for EFM have come from Pohick's laity. Leave a message in the office to speak with Charlotte Knipling for more information.
Brotherhood of St. Andrew
The Pohick chapter of the Brotherhood of St. Andrew conducts a bible study at its weekly Saturday breakfast, 89 am.
Lenten Series
During the five Wednesdays following Ash Wednesday, parishioners and guests gather for a Potluck Dinner at 6:30 pm followed by a variety of course offerings for both Young People and Adults. Worship caps off the evening at 8:00 pm.
Other Study Groups
Other Study Groups may be offered at varying times throughout the year at the request of parishioners. Articles in the Parish newsletter, The Pohick Post, will notify you of these groups as they form.
Spiritual Direction
Spiritual Direction is available from the clergy for individuals seeking guidance in their spiritual lives and wishing to find ways to deepen their devotional times. See the Rector's article on this ministry for more information.
