Reflection Questions for
St. Anselm’s Prayers and Meditations

1. Anselm clearly sees holiness of life arising from our continuous worship of
God. In what ways do I offer to God my praise and thanksgiving?

2. Anselm writes, “Thou wast created for the glory of thy Creator” (1.2). How
does my life manifest God’s glory?

3. What is Anslem’s view of the human condition?

4. How does Anselm see God involved in redeeming human sinfulness?

5. In several of his prayers, Anselm uses female imagery in referring to God
and/or Jesus. In what ways does this help (or hinder) my understanding of
God’s relationship with humanity?

6. What do you think Anselm means when he writes, “I seek not to understand
that I may believe, but I believe that I may understand” (21.103)? In what
ways has (or has not) this statement been true in my Christian journey?
