In the 17th Century, there was a great
increase in of scientific knowledge
Copernicus, Kepler and Galileo destroyed the
notion of the earth as the center of the universe.
Newton’s discoveries introduced the idea of
natural law, where the universe is governed by
unchanging laws of nature.
Scientific principles began to be applied to
biblical studies:
Textual criticism: which copies of the Greek text
are most reliable?
Historical criticism: which biblical accounts are
historically plausible?
