Puritanism’s Tenets
Scripture was the basis for all of life.
Puritan adherence to Scripture went beyond theological and
ethical teachings.
Puritans held that one could practice only those things
commanded in the Bible.
Worship should be simple and unadorned, with the
emphasis upon the sermon.
Holy Communion was de-emphasized, with many viewing it as a
memorial only.
Saints, vestments, candles and images were to be excluded.
Organ music and the use of liturgical gestures were viewed as
“popery.”
Spontaneity of worship was preferred over fixed forms of liturgy,
including Common Prayers and the reading of Scripture.
