John Jewel (1522-1571): Early Career
Professor and vicar at Oxford, Jewel stood firmly on the
side of the Reformation during the reign of Edward VI
(1547-53).
During Mary’s reign (1553-58), in fear for his life, he
initially signed a document professing Roman Catholic
beliefs, but quickly renounced this and fled to Germany.
There he came further under the influence of several of
the more moderate Continental reformers, particularly
the Italian Peter Martyr, his mentor at Oxford.
Upon Elizabeth’s accession, Jewel returned to England
in 1559 and was soon consecrated Bishop of Salisbury.
