Elizabeth I (1558–1603)
Via Media
Elizabeth restored the Reforms of Edward VI,
but adopted a more tolerant via media.
A more moderate 1559 BCP was produced.
“From the Bishop of Rome and all his Offenses, deliver us”
(BCP 1552) was dropped as an intercessory petition.
BCP 1549 and 1552 words of distribution combined:
“The body of our Lord Jesus Christ which was given for thee
preserve thy body and soul unto everlasting life [1549]. Take
and eat this in remembrance that Christ died for thee and
feed on Him in thy heart by faith with thanksgiving [1552].”
Even so, Catholics and Puritans who could not abide
by this solution and violated it were imprisoned.
