Cranmer as Henry’s Archbishop
Henry appointed Cranmer Archbishop of Canterbury in
1533.
Against the Pope’s command, Cranmer ruled Henry’s
marriage to Catherine null, and he ratified the king’s
marriage to Anne Bolelyn.
Cranmer served as the godfather for their soon-to-be-
born daughter, Elizabeth.
Until his death in 1547, Henry permitted Cranmer to
enact some modest reforms.
The Bible was translated into English
Beginning in 1543, one chapter of the English Bible was to be
read during Morning Prayer.
The first English rite, the Great Litany, was composed for use in
1544.
